The Name on the Window
Cedar · History: the Second World War (evacuees and the home front)
A name scratched in the glass: Arthur, 1941.
In 1941, ten-year-old Arthur is sent from Liverpool to a farm on Anglesey, where everyone at the kitchen table speaks Welsh and nobody wanted an extra mouth to feed. Each night he scratches a mark on his bedroom window and waits for a letter from home. Then a German bomber comes down in the fields, and Arthur is the only one who sees the young airman climb out alive. Now he has to decide what he is looking at: the enemy, or a frightened boy a long way from home.
For teachers: Fits work on evacuees and the home front, built around a real 1941 event on Anglesey, and asks older readers a hard question about who the enemy really is.
Format: Classroom book (three episodes) and three home reading booklets.
