In Mary's Footsteps
Chestnut · Science: rocks and fossils (inspired by Mary Anning)
Two hundred years ago, a girl found a sea monster on this beach. Today it's Nia's turn.
On the school residential to Lyme Regis, Nia hears the story of Mary Anning, the girl who found a sea monster in these cliffs over two hundred years ago. That night a storm brings down part of the cliff. On the morning beach walk, Nia, Oscar and Hamza spot something in the fallen rock: a row of huge stone teeth. Nobody believes three nine-year-olds have found a real fossil. But the tide is coming back in, and if they can't dig their monster out of the rock in time, the sea will take it.
For teachers: Fits rocks and fossils, and brings in Mary Anning through a group of modern children following in her footsteps.
Format: Classroom book (three episodes) and three home reading booklets.
