Keep the fire alive.

Bryn has one job while the hunters are away: keep the fire alive. For the second morning the hearth is grey, the flint will not catch and a frost is coming.

So Bryn and his sister Enid set out downriver to the next camp, to carry a live ember home before the frost sets in.

Inside: three episodes set in Stone Age Britain, anchor passages with phrase markings, syllable stacks and ROOTS vocabulary, Celebration Read scripts and a coach card for the adult. ISBN 978-1-995779-07-2.

Look inside

How the book works

Every chapter follows the same pattern, so children soon know where everything is. All they need is in the one book, so nothing is handed out mid-lesson.

  1. 1Words first

Each chapter opens with its own word page. Syllable Stacks build the long words a syllable at a time. The ROOTS word is one rich word with its line from the story. Words this chapter gives each new word a short meaning. A star marks a word that doesn’t sound the way it looks.

  2. 2The story

The chapter itself, fully illustrated. One passage sits in a tinted panel marked with an anchor: the Anchor Passage the class practises.

  3. 3The practice page

At the back, the Anchor Passage again, cued in phrases. A slash is a short pause; two slashes are a full stop. The marks never appear in the story.

  4. 4The Celebration Read

A script for each episode, made from its Anchor Passages, with a scene for each chapter. Children perform it in parts; the names in the margin show who speaks.

  5. 5The coach card

Inside the back cover, so it can’t be lost. Partners coach each other: one glow, one grow, read it again.

Pages shown from the Episode 1 booklet, which has the same pages and page numbers as the classroom book. Pages may change a little before publication.
